Test Your 3-Betting Skills From the Big Blind Vs the Button...

We are sure you're thinking, "what does my score mean?".

The way we measure our performance against the Trainer is by tracking "EV Loss" or Expected Value Loss. The best possible result after you pick your action is an EV Loss of 0. This means your action breaks even against a perfect player.

When EV Loss isn’t 0, the number shown is the amount of big blinds that we would lose taking a specific action in the long run.

it is possible to make a poor play (high EV Loss) that results in you winning a specific hand. I’m sure you’ve all seen players make bad plays and win the pot or make the right play and lose the pot. Over time EV Loss will track closer and closer to actual losses.

We only care about EV Loss, we don’t care whether or not we win any one particular hand.

This allows us to have a long term mindset towards poker that focuses on the quality of our decisions and not short term results.

Learn The Strategy For The 5 Tournament Hands You Just Played!

1007-85 Big-Blind-4x-3-Bet-vs-Wide-Button-Open-MTT

In a Tournament with 50BB stacks the Button open raises to 2.5BBs, you reraise to 10BBs from the Big Blind, the Button calls

The featured hands this week showcase correct tournament play from the Big Blind where the Button opens with wider than standard hand range to 2.5BBs with a big blind ante in play, you 3-bet a larger sizing to 10BBs, and they call.

In this scenario the Button’s range is somewhat capped. While they do call your raise with the big pairs in their range, big unpaired hands like AK/AQ are 4-bets. Your range is uncapped containing all of the big hands and has some polarization to it containing some hands like A5o and T6s both for board coverage and balance.

With the overall range advantage on most flops you will often be continuation betting as a default on any boards favorable to your range. You will use a mix of bet sizings with a larger continuation bet used with hands that benefit from protection. Examples of this are overpairs that still are vulnerable to overcards, as well as top pair hands on dynamic boards. The rest of the time you will mostly be continuation betting with a smaller sizing.

Since you will frequently continuation bet with medium sized stacks, you will be mixing in some slowplays on the turn to account for the times when you will have a lot of unmade hands on the turn as well. This will make it so that your opponent cannot profitably float your continuation bets with a wide variety of hands.

Another way to combat your opponent’s potential floating range is with over bets on the turn (in this case all-in) with both vulnerable strong hands and significant draws.

Aggressively defending your big blind against wide ranges from the Button will be a huge asset in the middle stages of tournaments. Mastering this skill will put you well on your way to becoming an expert tournament player!
