T.J. Murphy WSOP Bracelet Winner: 📸 Rachel Kay Winter

Week 2 of the WSOP brought our 1st WSOP Bracelet of the Series!

Long-time LearnWPT Student Timothy "T.J." Murphy took home his first WSOP Bracelet outlasting a huge field of 4,732 runners and banked an impressive $368,977 for the win.

T.J. roared into the Final Table as the chip leader and showed zero fear while using his huge stack to eliminate 6 of the 8 remaining players on his way to victory. Entering heads up play with a big chip advantage, it only took a few hands for T.J. to finish it out.

T.J. puts in the work everyday on LearnWPT.com and we are so happy to see it paying off! He’s submitted hundreds of hands to our Ask A Pro forum for analysis and trains constantly on the WPT GTO Trainer. Most people don't get to see all of the work and study a Student puts in behind the scenes, they just see the result. T.J. worked hard for this and his dominating performance showed it 👏.

🏆 LearnWPT Student T.J. Murphy WON the WSOP Deepstack No-Limit Hold'em Tournament!

Organize Your Poker Training

Now that you’ve discovered your starting point to learn and improve at poker, it’s time to organize your training assets and get on a study schedule. Depending on your goals as a player, you may want to study at least 3 days a week for a minimum of one hour per session when you first start learning a new poker strategy. The more ambitious your goal (for example, become a WPT Champion in 6 months), the more frequently you should study.

After you’ve identified your goals and outlined a general plan, it’s crucial to schedule your training sessions at times where it’s most convenient for you and any study partners. It’s often best to leave at least a few hours between poker study and play sessions to allow yourself a transition from study mode into execution mode.

If you’ve struggled with optimizing poker study sessions and maintaining momentum due to challenging personal schedules, you’ll also need a tool that helps organize and track your progress.

Get Your Poker Play Reviewed By An Expert

There are many factors to consider when analyzing a specific poker hand. A skilled poker coach has the proven fundamentals and decision making process to determine what is the most crucial to focus on when providing strategic feedback. The ability to consistently follow a process for reviewing play and recommending concrete steps for improvement based on proven strategy are desired traits when looking for a subject matter expert to accelerate your learning.

Unfortunately it’s not always easy to find trusted resources when it comes to getting direct feedback on poker strategy, and it’s often a challenge to receive timely responses to your poker questions given crazy schedules kept by many poker professionals.

learnwpt-ask-a-pro-forum

It can also be very cumbersome to track hand history details and capture all the necessary information from your poker play to accurately recount your trouble spots from a session. Often players struggle with recalling all of the specific details that are essential to correctly training and learning poker.

To make it easier for everyone to get strategy advice and direct feedback on their poker play, the Team at LearnWPT provides immediate access to experienced poker champions who are also expert teachers through a streamlined tool that helps you accurately record and store hands you play for analysis.

learnwpt-hit-what-happened-flop-blue

With the Ask a Pro Forums and the Hand Input Tool (HIT), you can quickly capture and share replays from hands you played directly to the Pros of Team LearnWPT and get timely and detailed strategic guidance to reinforce good habits while plugging your biggest leaks.

Practice Playing Poker As Often As You Can

We’ve mentioned it a few times in this article already, but it’s crucial to understand that the only way to actually test new skills you are learning is to play hands of poker. The speed of growth in a poker player's learning curve is often directly correlated to their ability to test new theories rapidly through execution and get immediate feedback from opponents.

For the majority of poker players there is a huge challenge in playing enough volume to reinforce new concepts and develop the real time feeling of responding to an opponent with advanced plays. The size of your bankroll is also a big factor in the ability to play a large quantity of poker sessions in order to perfect new strategies.

wpt-gto-trainer-ideal-action-fp

In order to accelerate your learning and close the experience gap fast, it’s recommended to use one of the many programs that allow poker players to train simulated No-Limit Texas Hold'em hands for practice. One of the most comprehensive and advanced options on the market, The WPT GTO Trainer, is a specialized poker training tool that is exclusive to the LearnWPT platform.

WPT-GTO-Trainer-Refine-Search

With the WPT GTO Trainer you can practice cash game, tournament, 6-max, final table ICM, and heads up scenarios vs a computerized opponent who is programmed to respond with the correct strategy for each decision point.

As an added feature, LearnWPT.com Members can share hands directly from the WPT GTO Trainer session summary to the Ask A Pro forum for detailed analysis and strategic explanation of the specific spots they are practicing. Ready to give it a try?

1029-32-MP2-Open-vs-Big-Blind-Call-MTT

Decision Point: In a Tournament with 50 big blind stacks you open raise to 2.5BBs from Middle Position and the Big Blind calls.

Now it’s time to test your skills from this spot and play a FREE sample of 5 tournament hands in the WPT GTO Trainer.

LearnWPT Members can play more poker hands from this common MTT spot with the MP2 Open Vs Big Blind Call WPT GTO Trainer pack.

Here are some tips when practicing with the WPT GTO Trainer:

  • Your goal is to select the action for each individual hand that is as close to 0.00 EV as possible
  • EV Loss of 0.00 is the same action a GTO Player would take
  • 0.00 EV Loss means you broke even against a GTO Player
  • EV Loss Color Coding Hint:
    • Green = Near GTO Play
    • Orange = Take Caution
    • Red = Probable Leak in Your Game
  • Questions on why a specific play was not preferred? Share the hand to the Pros for analysis directly from your Session Summary Dashboard!

Train The Mental Game

Learning strategic maneuvers and the specific mathematics that govern optimal decision making in a hand of No-Limit Hold’em is only the starting point to training your poker game for peak performance. Due to the statistical variance in No-Limit Hold’em poker you will face your fair share of bad beats (when an underdog beats a favorite) and have to deal with the emotional swings that occur from frustration, disappointment, and anger related to losing.

mental-game-tune-up-tournament-poker-diego-ventura

The world’s best poker players recognize that knowledge is only half the battle. Without the ability to execute and make complex decisions in a short amount of time with real money on the line, knowledge is reduced to trivia. The process of training your Mental Game is not that much different than training poker strategy, and there are proven strategies for reducing the effects of strong emotions on your decision making during play.

LearnWPT Mental Game Coach Jared Tendler is both a pioneer and innovator in the study of Mental Game training for poker players. His video Strategy Episodes on LearnWPT outline the causes of Mental Game errors and provide step-by-step instructions for proactively nurturing your emotions and stress levels before play.

Mental-Game-Tune-Up-Course

If you are preparing to play a major tournament series it’s also essential to prepare your Mental Game for the rigors of long hours and less than favorable run outs.

Jared Tendler has used his expertise to create a proven process to prepare for these intense stretches of poker with his turnkey course Mental Game Up Tune Up for Tournament Poker.

Commit to A Cycle of Constant Improvement

Focusing your attention on a goal in poker requires an understanding of how poker results don’t always line up with your study efforts due to variance. Your edge as a poker player is based on statistical probability over the long-term, which essentially means millions of poker hands. To make big gains in your poker playing ability you’ll need to trust the process and commit to a cycle of constant improvement, pledging to get better by at least 1% every day.

Committing to a cycle of constant improvement has huge benefits for your poker game, as you’ll focus on improving your worst and enhancing your best a little bit at a time. You’ll also likely see more benefits in other areas of your life, as you strive to eliminate nagging errors and upgrade your overall decision-making skills.

WPT Commentator, WPT Champion, and LearnWPT Instructor Tony Dunst knows what it takes to battle and win against the best poker players on the planet. In his Strategy Episode on the difference between the Amateur and Pro mentality, he breaks down the key traits of a poker pro and illustrates how their mindset leads to breaking through for big gains at the table.

Conclusion

🎯 The fastest way to learn poker is to adopt a system used by proven winners who know how to accelerate your learning through targeting training and a continuous feedback loop. To make the most of your journey playing poker, and to have more fun at the table, it’s important to identify your goals and work towards them in a supportive community of subject matter experts.

Organizing your poker training content and scheduling study sessions can be challenging both for you and any study partners. Choosing a platform designed specifically to help you learn and grow as a poker player is ideal for improving your play fast. You don’t want to waste valuable time trying to plan your study sessions or figure out what content you should be watching.

Practice makes perfect, and it’s even more important to get in a large volume of hands when learning new concepts. You need a training tool that uses Game Theory Optimal Outputs and provides immediate feedback for your poker decisions, including for all different types of games and situations.

✅ Finally, it’s crucial to surround yourself with poker players and coaches who are knowledgeable in strategy and adept at teaching poker to students of all experience and skill levels. You need direct access to skilled poker players who have proven their worth at the table in order to really advance your poker education. It’s also essential to have tools built specifically for poker training that are designed to work together as a system and help you be as efficient as possible with our study time away from the felt.

We hope you enjoyed this handy guide to give the Fastest Way to Learn Poker, no matter if you are just finding the game or if you’ve played your fair share of No-Limit Texas Hold’em.

LearnWPT Tour Terms: Floating

Tour-Terms-Floating

Hey Poker Fans!

Welcome to Tour Terms, where we break down key terms that poker pros use to talk strategy and give you helpful tips to use in your next poker tournament. Today's Tour Term is …

Floating: verb
float·ing \ ˈflō-tiŋ \

1) To call a bet as the In Position player with the intention of taking away the pot on a later street using aggressive action. This is often done with a hand that has not connected with the board in any way.

Example of Floating in a Sentence:
Brian raises preflop to 1500 in Middle Position with A♥K♦ and Johan calls on the Button with J♣T♦. On the flop of 9♥7♥4♦ Brian c-bets 2200. Johan chooses to Float with two overcards that also have a backdoor flush draw plus gutshot straight draw and calls 2200.

Fold Less, Float More!

Tired of competing against THAT poker player who always seems to be dragging pots with preflop raises and constant continuation bets? Take away their equity advantage and turn aggression on its heels with the Float.

Tune in to this LearnWPT Strategy Episode as Instructor Nick Binger gives you step-by-step guidelines to identify the best situations to Float vs a frequent c-bettor and how to apply this move effectively.

Floating is an effective strategy to counter c-bet bluffs as a fair percentage of flops will not connect with the range of the preflop raiser. These weak hands are usually forced to give up and check on many turn cards, giving the Floater a prime opportunity to bluff.

Utilize the power of position to turn aggression around on your opponents and add Floating to your poker move-making toolkit.

Additional Episodes to review that Nick discusses:

Episode 91: Protecting C-Bets (countering a Floater)
Episode 72: Basic Linear Preflop Play
Download The Linear Preflop Decision Tree
Episode 3: Speculative Preflop Calling
Episode 150: Linear Vs Polarized 3-Betting

🖥️ Floating In Action at a WPT Final Table

Take a Closer Look at this pivotal hand from the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star featuring a common situation where a player Floats on the flop with backdoor equity vs an opponent holding a 1-pair hand and watch as Nick demonstrates how this poker Pro puts theory into practice.

✍️ Tips for Pulling Off a Float in Poker:

Floating is essentially calling on the flop without a real hand with a plan to take away the pot on the turn using aggression
Float specific situations only, calling too often will result in profit loss
Limit Floating to spots where you are In Position (when you are last to act and someone has bet into you)
Float against a single opponent - avoid Floating in multiway pots

Floating Criteria

Target situations where you have a hand with good equity and can potentially create fold equity through aggressive action
Choose hands that can turn additional equity (backdoor draws, over cards on the flop)
Choose boards where the next card could be a scare card (draw on the flop that you can represent)
We often will be Floating with Speculative Hands

Put Your Floating Skills to the Test!

Solver Study With Tony Dunst: Making Calls

It can be an uncomfortable feeling to continue against aggression in a poker hand with marginal holdings. If you aren’t careful in selecting when to peel off another card with bottom pair or a backdoor draw, you can easily bleed off chips and sabotage deep runs.

In this Strategy Episode LearnWPT Instructor Tony Dunst dissects lessons learned from solver study to show you spots where calling more often with a wider range of hands against standard aggression is preferred.

From the Felt: Floating and Turn Play

After learning clear guidelines for the ideal spots to Float the flop and take advantage of your position more skillfully, it’s time to examine how this strategy transitions to playing the turn in actual real-world game scenarios.

Tune into and watch this deep dive into two hands from a high stakes online event featuring Nick Binger including a flop Float with AQo and a tough spot with QQ vs a squeeze play from the Small Blind.

Poker Quiz Time! Would You Float the Turn?

QT-Vs-a-Loose-Aggressive-Player

DECISION POINT: In a Tournament where blinds are 100/200 a Middle Position player (who you’ve observed as being loose aggressive) raises to 600. You call from the Button with Q♣T♣. Heads-up on a J♥5♥7♣ flop Villain bets out 600 and action is on you. What would do you do?

Poker Is...

Today more than ever before, drama and conflict gets more attention than quiet consistency and determination. If you pay attention to social media and what is pushed the most, you know this is the case. Instead of being focused on substance and specificity, it's become a contest to see who can yell the loudest and the longest.

Poker Is... not immune to the pressures of sensationalism in media and marketing and lately seems to be getting attention for all the wrong reasons. Whether it's multi-accounting online, cheating in live stream games, or new apps that may help players solve for the best move in real time, Poker certainly has had its share of bad press. Some find that drama entertaining and are drawn to poker, albeit for the wrong reasons.

It's just not the reality of what Poker Is.

LearnWPT-Borgata-Students

Look closer. Wade through the initial barrage of the latest "news" and the trash talk that seems to permeate coverage of the game.

What do you find?

The next time you sit down at your home game, local casino, or WPT event, take a good look at the fellow competitors at the table and you will certainly notice something different. Players there to have fun and compete - they are construction workers, school teachers, entrepreneurs, business professionals, parents, and retirees.

People just like you.

LearnWPT-Students

There's no team to be on or beef to carry. Just 52 cards, 5 community cards, and the best hand at showdown.

The real truth is, Poker is... a strategic game with rules and sportsmanship. A game that is here for everyone, regardless of where you're from, what you look like, your experience, or your skill. On any given day, anyone can win.

Don't get distracted by all of the noise designed to make you think what Poker Is... to them. Choose a poker community that is dedicated to helping EVERYONE learn to play, have fun, and be a part of it on their own terms.

LearnWPT Tour Terms: 3-Betting

LearnWPT-Tour-Terms-3-Bet

Hey Poker Fans!

Welcome to Tour Terms, where we break down key terms that poker pros use to talk strategy and give you helpful tips to use in your next poker tournament. Today's Tour Term is …

3-Bet: verb
three·bet \ ˈthrē ˈbet \

1) The act of raising after another player has raised the initial bet amount first-in. For example, in a tournament where blinds are 25-50, Player A opens the pot to 150 preflop and Player B raises to 450. In this instance Player B is 3-Betting the pot.

Example of 3-Bet in a Sentence
Tony raises preflop to 150 and LuckyChewy 3-Bets to 450 with A♠5♠.

So, What Hands Should You 3-Bet With 🤔?

Fighting back vs aggression from your opponents can be stressful and it’s hard to know exactly when you should reraise and which hands to do it with. Watch this in-depth Strategy Episode with LearnWPT Instructor Nick Binger as he breaks down the key factors you should look for when deciding to 3-bet:

5 Key 🗝️ Reminders for 3-Betting:

In order to win tournaments you can’t simply wait for good cards
3-Betting is key to winning pots without showing down your hand
Avoid 3-Betting with bad cards in cash games
Target players with medium sized (30 to 50 big blind) stacks to pressure with 3-bets
Players opening the pot from late position are likely to have wider hand ranges

3-Betting Ace King With The Champ 🥊

Staying aggressive with Ace King is essential for making deep runs and bringing home tournament titles. Many players struggle with how to effectively apply aggression with Ace King, especially vs sticky opponents.

Check out this Strategy Episode with 3x WPT Champion and LearnWPT Instructor Brian Altman from a $2,200 buy-in event at Wynn Las Vegas and learn his strategy for playing AK in a 3-bet pot.

The Cup 🏆 Awaits!

You are in a World Poker Tour main event with the Mike Sexton Champions Cup on the line! A late position player raises first-in and you 3-Bet from the Button with a 50BB stack. Your opponent calls and you are off to the flop...

Now it’s time to test your skills from this spot and play a FREE Tournament sample of 5 hands in the WPT GTO Trainer.

Your goal is to keep "EV Loss" in the green and close to 0, good luck!

🖥️ Watch 3-Betting In Action

3-Betting is a powerful move that experts use to pressure opponents and force even the toughest players to retreat.

Check out this hand from WPT Season XIII for an in-depth look at a 3-bet pot with big money on the line and watch as Nick demonstrates how this Pro perfectly puts theory into practice.

WSOP Week 6 Achievements

Week 6 of the WSOP began with the record-shattering Main Event!

The record for the largest WSOP Main Event field in its 54-year history was broken with a total of 10,043 entries. The event generated a total prize pool of $93,399,900, smashing the previous record of $82,512,162 set in 2006 that had a total of 8,773 entrants.

LearnWPT Instructor and WPT Commentator Tony Dunst battled and played like the Champion he is but fell just short in his quest to secure his 3rd WSOP Bracelet after getting knocked out when his straight was beat by a straight flush sending Tony out in 66th place on Day 6.

As always Tony went out with class and style. We are extremely proud to have Tony as part of Team LearnWPT and can't wait to cheer on his next remarkable performance on the felt.

Poker Quiz! Pocket Eights Facing an All-In, What Do You Do Here?

Pocket Eights Facing an All-In Online

DECISION POINT:
In an online Tournament with blinds at 500/1,000 and a 1,000 big blind ante you are dealt 8♣8♠ in the Cutoff seat. Stacks at the table range from 10BBs to just over 40BBs. The early position players fold, the MP1 player open shoves for 15,000 (15BBs) and action is on you with 21BBs behind.

What do you do here?

PRO ANSWER: We are in the middle stages of a major Sunday online tournament. The blinds are 500/1,000 with a 1,000 big blind ante. The stacks range from 10 big blinds to just over 40. We are dealt black eights in the cutoff and it folds to MP1 who open shoves for 15,000.! Everyone else folds and action is on us.

When analyzing spots like this after the fact, we should approach from two perspectives. First, we should estimate MP1 range and how our hand performs against that range, much like we would in real-time at the table. Second, we should double check our estimate in real-time by running the spot in a solver to see what things look like when both players are using optimal ranges.

Studying in this way allows us to exercise our brain in the same way that we will use at the table, and then either reinforce our thoughts with the solver or discover any errors.

If the decision was wrong in real-time we can determine if this is a fundamental leak and what adjustments need to be incorporated to our game plan. If the opponent was likely shoving different ranges than the solvers suggest which may often be the case, then we can consider the merits of making an exploitative adjustment against our real life foes.

A primary consideration is whether MP1 has a non all-in raising range here. It’s likely at this stack size that they would raise a more standard sizing and not just move all-in with AA/KK and some of their other biggest hands.

Continued below...

Given this we can assume that MP1 is likely to have a capped range that includes many suited broadway hands, some big Ax hands, and some middle pairs. The key factor we need to assess is if MP1 will ever move all-in with pocket pairs lower than 88 or Ax combinations where their kicker is lower than 8.

In real-time we thought it was possible our opponent is capable of shoving as light as 77, but 66 or less and A8s or worse seemed unlikely so we chose to fold.

Through post hand analysis using a Game Theory Optimal Solver we can see that if MP1 is splitting their range properly the all-in range will include 66-99, A8s-AJs, AKo, KJs, KTs, QTs+. The range of hands that prefers to raise a standard amount first-in at 15BB blinds includes a mix of stronger hands (TT+/AQs+), some smaller suited Ax combinations, and offsuit broadway hands. Against the specific all-in range provided by the Solver we see that 88 has a +550 chip (+.55 BB) expectation. This means that against an opponent using GTO ranges we should be calling, although the decision is still very close.

In real world situations many players might shove hands such as TT/JJ, especially as they don’t want to encourage action and have to play postflop. If MP1 was the type of opponent to use this larger sizing with medium pairs that may be vulnerable on overcard flops then this spot would quickly become a fold. We would also have an easier call if we were in the Blinds with fewer players behind yet to act.

Against a GTO opponent, calling is the best play. Against specific opponents shoving narrower ranges or higher pairs, you could make an exploitative fold.

How would you play it?
