It's Never Too Late to Win Gold!🏆

Sue Faber - WSOP Bracelet cropped - optmzd.jpg

Susan Faber, a 71-year-old tax accountant that enjoys playing poker as a hobby, showed up to the 50th WSOP event with the goal of enjoying herself and being competitive. When the dust settled Sue navigated the massive 2000+ player field and collected her first WSOP bracelet, with a $500 buy-in event with a $121,161 first place prize.

Susan chose this event due to it being a Salute to Warriors No-Limit Hold’em event, where an impressive amount of $43,075 was raised for charity. After being introduced to online poker 10 years ago by her son, Sue’s interest in the game peaked and she started looking for classes where she could improve. That’s when Sue found the LearnWPT workshop training events held live in Las Vegas.

Sue’s plan for success includes using LearnWPT membership features to up her game. Specific tasks for improvement include reviewing Strategy Episodes, focusing on adding new strategies to improve, and incorporating Jared Tendler's Mental Game strategies to handle big losses. She now relies on learning and memorizing the opening hand ranges, helping to free up mental energy to focus on her next moves, as well as using board texture to make consistent betting decisions

After dominating the final table, Susan stated that LearnWPT has given her the skills and confidence needed to win the bracelet, and that she would be coming back.

‘The Couple That Plays Together, Stays Together’👫

Team-Roberts

Lisa and Scott Roberts, known as Team Roberts, have been married for 37 years and have a true passion for the game of poker. Since beginning their poker journey Scott and Lisa have earned $125,000 in poker tournament winnings.

Scott and Lisa are super-students of LearnWPT, having attended several Live and Digital LearnWPT Workshops, acquiring knowledge and powering them to several huge wins. Team Roberts has amassed a list of impressive results including Scott winning the WSOP Circuit $400 event in Florida for $6,994, and Lisa earning second place in a $250 seniors event for $5,284, as well as taking sixth in a $600 turbo for $2,100. Scott also amassed enough points with several deep finishes to be named the player of the series.

Scott is quick to reveal that he and Lisa didn't realize how much they didn't know about the game until discovered LearnWPT Live Workshops and the interactive LearnWPT.com training platform, where the platform instructors and professional poker players Nick Binger and Andrew Lichtenberger 'opened their eyes up'.

With Nick Binger's advice on building aggression into your game which included playing to raise on the button every time action folded to them regardless of the cards they had, as well as to 4-bet if one of the blinds 3-bet, the couple stepped out of their comfort zone and incorporated a more bold and assertive strategy to their game.

The instructors' guidance definitely paid off. The exact week that Nick Binger provided the eye-opening strategy advice, Lisa made the final table and both she and Scott made $10,000 playing tournaments. Both members of Team Roberts mentioned the specific manner in which LearnWPT has influenced their game. Lisa has embraced a more aggressive approach, and Scott has learned to adjust his game to various scenarios, with both of them learning how to maximize their profits.

Crediting LearnWPT for shaping them into a winning team, Lisa has stated that the platform classes are the best poker money they have ever spent, and they plan to continue their LearnWPT journey.

LearnWPT Student Bryant Seeing the Skills He Has Acquired Pay Off!

Bryant Morrision - WSOP Ring win - optmizd.jpg

Bryant Morrison, a passionate and life-long poker player, recently won his first WSOP Circuit Ring in the Seniors Event at the Choctaw Durant stop, receiving an impressive $13,948 for a $250 buy-in.

A LearnWPT Platinum Member, Bryant attended two LearnWPT Live Workshops, which, according to him, have helped him understand the game better and attain a greater strategy.

The significance of participating in both workshops with fellow players trying to improve their game, and direct access to have your play observed and get immediate feedback from instructors and professional poker players, is integral in Bryant’s growth as a player. The flexibility of on-demand access and comprehensive selection of content has helped him sharpen his game much better than simply playing poker.

The key feature that drives Bryant’s success is the WPT GTO Trainer. By practicing vs the world’s perfect poker opponent, Bryant developed strategies and patterns needed to minimize his losses and maximize expected value which shaped him into a skilled player capable of identifying those same scenarios at the tables and executing the moves when the pressure is on.

Through small amounts of consistent effort over time studying and practicing LearnWPT game plan, Bryant’s perspective on poker has changed dramatically, thinking of stack size as BBs and always knowing where he is in the tournament.

As for aspiring players improving their No-Limit Hold’em game, Bryant once again recommends using the WPT GTO trainer. The ability to play and practice on your own time and schedule, as opposed to having to travel to a casino is key to developing a steady practice routine and measuring your improvement.

Making History Winning Rings and Casino Championships!

Manju

Manju G. managed to make history by becoming the 1st woman to win a WSOP Circuit ring at Thunder Valley Resort Casino. She credits the LearnWPT workshop she attended at Commerce Casino for providing her both with the needed confidence and a strategic blueprint required to manage different poker tournament sections, allowing her to cash in more times in the last 7 months than all of last year and earning her the title of the Casino Champion and a free $10,000 seat.

Yves F. is a long-time LearnWPT member who made use of his interactive experience at a LearnWPT Live Workshop to run up a big cash game stack at Borgata by utilizing effective preflop strategies that work with a solid postflop game.

Yet another LearnWPT member, Rhode, from Wimauma, FL, began playing poker in 2015, with no strategy or understanding of the game. Motivated by LearnWPT commercials during a televised broadcast of the World Poker Tour, Rhode decided to join LearnWPT. After just a few video lessons and attending a LearnWPT workshop, Rhode was able to win 2 cruise ship tournaments, the second one valued at $3800, as well as a $750 entry into the $100,000 tournament on the new cruise. In 2017, he played 71 tournaments, 11 of which he won, adding 8 more cashes.

Last but not least, LearnWPT members Tazo and Shirley, from Las Vegas, NV, who are retired and jokingly say that they have more than 150 years combined, have taken up playing tournaments and learning poker strategies. Tazo and Shirley are dedicated students and subscribers to LearnWPT and due to their following the LearnWPT curriculum both cash consistently, in 30-35% range, playing 300+ tournaments last year. Having fun while doing it, as well as reviving and strengthening their poker game, Tazo and Shirley are proud to share how the LearnWPT game-plan has changed their lives drastically.

WPT Final Table Play with Tony Dunst

To make sure you are prepared to shine for the TV cameras and show off your skills, we’ve got some important strategies to share to help you get ready.

Final Table Strategy can differ dramatically from the early stages of a tournament, especially with huge pay-jumps and the prestige that only comes with winning a World Poker Tour title. Often players are unprepared for the pressure that comes with playing in front of an audience and for potentially life-changing money at stake.

When you are facing the pressure of big pay jumps and the studio lights seem just a little too bright, it’s important to stay focused and make objective decisions.

Watch this LearnWPT Strategy Episode from LearnWPT Instructor and WPT Commentator Tony Dunst for key insights on how the Pros perform on the big stage.

Here are a few tips to help sharpen up your game for showtime!

  • Be aware of stack sizes and pay jumps at all times, even the slightest changes in stack sizes can shift strategy dramatically
  • When short stacks exist, there is extra pressure on the bigger stacks to avoid busting out
  • The chip leaders can use this extra pressure to win many pots while the short stack is in play
  • As a medium stack vs larger stacks be cautious with any bets and raises and try to take marginal hands to showdown passively
  • Preflop ranges shift quite a bit at final tables due to this effect with big stacks playing much wider ranges and medium stacks much narrower ranges
  • Do not be afraid to ramp up your aggression against players that are playing tight in the hopes of laddering up

Not 1, Not 2, But 3 Final Tables

The WPT Prime, World, and Ladies Championship Final Tables will be filmed for Television in the Wynn Encore Ballroom!

Battling From the Blinds With Brian Altman

Brian-Altman-WPT-Seminole-Rock-Roll-Open

Practicing your play from the Blinds will have a dramatic impact on your tournament results, particularly in higher buy-in tournaments with tougher competition. Facing aggressive late position opponents with marginal hands, especially hands containing an ace with a weak kicker, often result in players making huge mistakes.

3x World Poker Tour Champion and WPT Player of the Year Brian Altman is no stranger to tough battles playing from the blinds against the world’s best poker players.

Watch this LearnWPT Strategy Episode as Brian details his strategy from this spot from a $5,300 event at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood to demonstrate championship play from the Big Blind facing an aggressive and tricky player on the Button.

Tony Dunst on Broadway

WPT-Seminole-Rock-Roll-Tony Dunst

Broadway hands
(any 2 card combo that can make an A-K-Q-J-T straight) are often preferred combos for taking aggressive actions like raising first-in to the pot and 3-betting. While sometimes the approach to play these hands can seem straightforward, there are often very close decisions with hands even as strong as top pair particularly when stacks are shallow.

LearnWPT Instructor Tony Dunst played 3 key hands during a WPT Main Event at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, and he took some time to break down the unique lessons from each spot.

Check out this Strategy Episode to learn the importance of position and SPR (Stack to Pot Ratio) when it comes to playing broadway hands as both the initial raiser and by defending the blinds. Tony shows you how the strategy shifts based on the situation and how a WPT Champion breaks down these spots to improve their play.

WPT Five Diamond Throwback - Tony Gives LuckyChewy The Raw Deal

The WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic has a rich history of incredible poker action and has spawned many poker legends.

Check out this throwback segment from a classic World Poker Tour® episode as Tony Dunst gives a little "Raw Deal" analysis of fellow LearnWPT Instructor Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger's play against Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari during the final table of the Season XI WPT Five Diamond Main Event.

How Does a Pro Handle The Pressure?

Watch this Strategy Episode as WPT Commentator and LearnWPT Instructor Tony Dunst gives a behind the scenes look at the 2019 WPT Bellagio Five Diamond $10K Main Event using actual hands he played to show you the moves he makes with big money at stake.

Bluffing Strategy With The 3X Champ

To win a WPT Title you’ll need to make your fair share of hands but also be willing to put it on the line and fire a bluff when necessary.

In this Strategy Episode 3x World Poker Tour Champion and WPT Player of the Year Brian Altman gives you the thought process behind his aggressive bluffing strategy.

WPT Five Diamond Throwback - Vanessa Vs LuckyChewy In a Flip

The final 3 players in the WPT 5 Diamond World Poker Classic are typically pretty tough. In the Season 10 edition of this event that saying definitely held true, with poker legends and LearnWPT Instructors Vanessa Selbst and LuckyChewy being 2 of the 3 remaining.

In this throwback hand we see the two members of Team LearnWPT clash in a classic coin flip spot with massive ICM implications in play.

Final Table Tips From Champions

Final Table Strategy can differ dramatically from the early stages of a tournament, especially with huge pay-jumps and the prestige that only comes with winning a World Poker Tour title.

Often players are unprepared for the pressure that comes with playing in front of an audience and how your decision making is affected with potentially life-changing money at stake.

WPT-Five-Diamond-World-Classic-Season-2017-2018-Final-Table

While it's difficult to recreate the pressure of performing with the eyes of the world on you, you can start practicing now to succeed at the final table when it matters most.

Here are a few tips to help sharpen up your game for showtime!

Be aware of stack sizes and pay jumps at all times, even the slightest changes in stack sizes can shift strategy dramatically
When short stacks exist, there is extra pressure on the bigger stacks to avoid busting out
The chip leaders can use this extra pressure to win many pots while the short stack is in play
As a medium stack vs larger stack you should be cautious with any bets and raises and try to take marginal hands to showdown passively
Preflop ranges shift quite a bit at final tables due to this effect, with big stacks playing much wider ranges and medium stacks much narrower ranges
Do not be afraid to ramp up your aggression against players that are playing tight in the hopes of laddering up

3-Bet Defense With The 3x Champ

LearnWPT Instructor Brian Altman

3x World Poker Tour Champion and WPT Player of the Year Brian Altman has spent over a decade refining his skills and training for championship moments. His attacking style and ability to make quick decisions under pressure are key factors to closing out tournaments.

At the core of Brian’s exceptional decision making is his ability to observe opponent tendencies and adjust his play to exploit them and maximize value. Staying present in the moment and identifying these slight deviations in your opponent’s playing style are essential to conquering high stakes tournaments.

Watch this LearnWPT Strategy Episode as Brian breaks down a 3-bet pot with Ace Queen suited from the $3,500 WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open where opponent info plays a big part.

Brian’s Tips for Defending 3-Bet Pots:

Opponent Tendencies: Is this 3-betting range likely to be wide or narrow? How skilled are they postflop?
Stack Depth: At medium stack depths (around 50-60BBs) it is sometimes better to trap than 4-bet shove
Staying Balanced: Flat with some premium hands (suited combos are often best to defend by calling) in order to balance vs bluffs

Play Ace King Like a Legend

The thrill of looking down at your hole cards to see Ace King is often quickly followed by anxiety.

What raise size should you use preflop? Should you continuation bet if there is no Ace or King on the flop? How much should you bet?

Some players get so frustrated they may resort to only push/fold with AK, even with huge stacks. We’ve all got our horror stories with Ace King, however if you are focusing on the right factors your decisions with Big Slick can be much simpler.

Tune in to this Strategy Episode from LearnWPT Instructor and poker phenom Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger for a strategic breakdown of how to approach different flops with Ace King offsuit after you are the preflop raiser.

The next time you're faced with a tough flop decision, use the info from this Episode and you’ll have much less stress with AK.

Word of the Day: Community

com·mu·ni·ty noun /kəˈmyo͞onədē/

LearnWPT-Community

  1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
  2. a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Each of us is part of a particular community, and the importance of belonging to a community of people who share your interests can’t be measured. Every person longs for belonging. We all want to feel that we belong and have a sense of identity with our community, whether it be large or small.

A community can mean so many things depending on how each individual experiences it. People often feel a sense of togetherness and belonging when they are around peers who share similar interests. This feeling often leads to a deeper connection between community members and greater enjoyment of their common interests - in this case, the love of poker!

Community-collage-optimzd.jpg

The best players in the game today share ideas and collaborate with their peers within a trusted poker community to improve their play and elevate their game.

A poker community is a group of people who have come together to have fun learning and improving while supporting each other along the way. The common love of poker and the shared desire to help each other find a way for all members to grow their game in a safe and friendly place is the foundation of a community like ours.

The ability to have a community dedicated to poker where you can share experiences, mistakes, practice with each other and share advice, is just as valuable for the new poker player as it is for the aspiring professionals who are passionate about their game and want to improve it.sharing storie

We know that one of the most challenging aspects of improving your poker game is the feeling of being alone on your journey and not having a team (or, better yet, a community) to support your poker goals.

That's why we created the LearnWPT Community!

The desire for community is universal, and many find their place in groups that share a common passion or idea. There is something extraordinary about being a part of a group of people who share something they feel passionately about.

So, are you playing poker and wondering how being part of a poker community can help you grow and become a better player?

Or, you are already aware of all the benefits but you are not sure how to join and become part of this massive poker family?

No matter where you are in your poker journey, answers to any poker questions you might have can be found on The LearnWPT Community Forums. Our community members ask questions daily and get advice, feedback, and real strategy help they can put into action.

We wanted all LearnWPT Members to have the same positive feedback loop and community with the top pros in the game to help them improve and upgrade their play. The LearnWPT Community we created is a safe place, full of passionate poker players who desire to learn, achieve, and have fun achieving their goals.

The LearnWPT Community forum provides an open platform for poker enthusiasts to engage in deep discussions about all things related to the game. Whether you're looking for help with your strategy or want someone else's take on how they won a hand, there are plenty of poker players just like you waiting here who will be happy (and more than willing) to share their thoughts!

How can YOU benefit from being part of a Community of YOUR peers and Instructors?

For many aspiring players, the path to becoming better at poker begins with understanding just exactly what they can improve. When you are starting on the path to learning poker you will have many questions and most likely you won’t know a person with suitable knowledge to discuss these with you.

Well… do you have questions about your poker game like these:

  • What exactly does the term “straddle” mean and is it profitable in your live $1-2 game?
  • After I raised preflop from the SB I wasn’t sure if the best play here was to continue or just check. See my attached HIT hand. Thanks for any input and thoughts…
  • After downloading the first-in hand range charts, does anyone have tips for memorizing the ranges. Does anyone bring them to the tables with them as a guide?
  • After watching Episode #316 today I have a couple questions related to the second hand played where Nick had JJ…
  • Traveling to Vegas … best place for cash live poker 1/2 or 1/3?

These are just some of the questions Members are asking and getting answers to in The LearnWPT Community Forums.

The LearnWPT Community forums provide a space for members to get feedback, advice, and in-depth strategy help for any poker topics you want to explore. Participate in these discussions and learn new ideas and help your fellow members learn more about poker while growing your own game.

Community-page

Do you love to talk about all things poker? The LearnWPT community is here for you.

Join in discussions on Cash and Tournament concepts or anything related to this game we love so much in the General Discussion forum.

The Community is a safe place for students of the game to join fellow LearnWPT Members (and our Pros!) to create that loop and:

  • Discuss concepts or issues they are encountering on the path to being a better player. Have you ever tried to learn something but found it difficult? You might be surprised at how many people have had similar experiences.
  • Receive feedback from peers on how they played a hand. Feedback from peers will help you improve your decision-making when playing hands, and it's important to observe the play and analysis to unlock new perspectives in your game plan.
  • Find answers about strategy and concepts they are unsure of. LearnWPT Instructors Eric "Rizen" Lynch and Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger visit the community to answer questions and join Member discussions!
  • Expand their poker feedback loop to develop a continuous process for improvement. The community can help players identify what needs to be improved in their own game and provide valuable feedback and advice on how to make meaningful changes and master their game.
  • Talk all things poker related!

The LearnWPT Community is a great place for professionals to expand their poker feedback loop and develop continuous process improvement through discussion. Post and discuss ideas with other members, or share some of yours! We're excited to hear from you!

Running deep in a poker tournament with big money on the line requires many tough decisions, especially on the river when the pot is likely the largest. If you aren’t paying attention to how your opponent’s range can change throughout the hand, you’ll likely be in some super tough spots.

Facing tough river decisions is more common in poker tournaments with deep structures and against more skilled players. In many cases, your tournament will come down to how effective your observation skills are and how you use an opponent’s actions to narrow their range.

Watch this Strategy Episode from LearnWPT Instructor and WPT Commentator Tony Dunst as he walks through hands played during a Tournament Series at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas to review some river leaks.

Here are 3 Key Takeaways to help you play better on the river:

  • Avoid leading rivers when you have an opponent's range dominated - checking is likely to induce bluffing
  • Just because you are at the top of your range, it doesn’t mean your opponent has to be bluffing when they raise on the river
  • River raises in multiway pots almost always indicate the nuts - most players do not risk their stack on zero equity bluffs multiway

Can You Fold Pocket Aces Here?

To win poker tournaments you have to make your fair share of big hands and have the skill to get your opponent to put the money in when you have the best of it. However, it's not only about the hands you win... it is often about the times when you choose to throw your two cards into the muck.

Do you have what it takes to fold the best starting hand in poker, deep in the later stages of a high stakes poker tournament?

Sure it sounds crazy to even consider, however if you don’t have the mindset and clarity to recognize even when the best hand in poker is beat and get away with minimal damage to your stack, you won’t be getting heads up for the title often.

So how do you know when to let go of pocket rockets and preserve your stack for a better spot?

Watch and learn as poker legend Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger walks you through a key spot late in a $10K buy-in where he had the skill to fold pocket aces on the flop. and breaks down the key factors to his decision.

Poker Bankroll Management Top Guide by Team LearnWPT

Bankroll-Management

When it comes to playing poker, there are many poker strategies and practices that can help improve your game. The more attention you pay to every aspect of your poker game that can be improved, the more likely you are to achieve success in cash games and poker tournaments.

What is poker bankroll management?

One of the concepts that is key to playing successful poker is bankroll management. In this blog, we will give you solid guidelines for poker bankroll management, outline its tools and principles, and tell you how to use it as a poker player.

Poker bankroll management is a money management strategy in professional poker based on statistical probability and skill level. It is an essential part of playing poker. With bankroll management, you can practice reducing or eliminating your risk of ruin by minimizing losses against gains.

A bankroll is money set aside exclusively to play poker. Having a bankroll offers a lot of advantages over not having a bankroll. If you're just playing poker out of money that is part of your everyday ordinary life money, that can create a lot of problems. You're only going to go so far with your poker career if you keep playing that way. On the other hand, having a dedicated bankroll offers many advantages.

Savings-bankroll-management-tool-cash

Bankroll money is a little bit different than everyday money. You should think of it as a tool that you're going to use to make more money and work your way up in stakes. When you separate your bankroll completely in this manner, you set it aside from the money you would use to pay a mortgage payment, buy a car, or have dinner with. Treat your bankroll as the money you will use as an investment in your poker career and growth.

When you keep a proper poker bankroll, you don't have to worry about those normal ups and downs and normal swings that just occur naturally because of variance. A proper bankroll can help you survive those inevitable downswings that have to happen during the normal course of playing poker over time.

An excellent way to manage your bankroll is to physically separate it from your everyday money. Most card rooms and casinos offer safety deposit boxes, and those are good places to keep your poker bankroll. This way you will keep it away from your everyday money and feel safer since you don't have to travel to and from the card room or casino with cash on you.

Now, you are probably thinking - How should you decide the size of your bankroll? When playing poker, it's essential to always to know the size of your bankroll. If you don't have a specific amount of money set aside for the game of poker, then how can you decide what games are worth playing?

Knowing which games are worth playing with your available cash will actually depend on whether you are a professional player or not. Professional poker players often have a target amount of income required and will therefore choose the stakes that will allow them to most reliably earn a specific hourly rate. Those who are not professional poker players should use a set percentage of their entertainment budget to invest in playing poker.

Although it may be tempting to try and jump into bigger games right away given the potential reward for success, it’s much more enjoyable and puts much less stress on your game to maintain poker bankroll management rules.

Whether you are a top professional or someone new to the game, keeping track of your cash game sessions and tournament buy-ins and results is important to making good decisions with your poker bankroll.

pro-poker-tournament

After you’ve played several cash games and tournaments and have a good sample size to compare, it seems your game is ready to move up in levels against tough competition. So, how can you make sure you are prepared to go pro?

Many poker players question how long it will take them to become better players and actually just how much time it takes to reach the long-term when evaluating your ability at the poker table. There are several factors that go into playing better poker however, improvement will mostly depend on how frequently you practice and how hard you work. If you are practicing every day, you will surely make faster progress than the person who works on their poker game for only one hour a week. As long as you create a consistent study routine over time, you are on the right path to becoming a better poker player.

It takes time to reach the long-term in poker, and that time period will be different between cash games vs. tournaments. For cash games, around 20,000 hands and 700 hours of live time at the table is around the amount of play you’ll need to know if you are a winning, break-even, or losing player.

For tournament poker variance is more considerable and it will also depend on how big the fields are in the tournaments you play. After 1,000 tournaments you should be able to get a good sense of your skill level and profitability.

Having a proper poker bankroll allows you to focus on decision-making at the table without the pressure of playing above your budget.

If you want to progress as a poker player, you will have to start thinking long-term instead of short-term. Don’t get overly emotional based on a good or bad result of any single hand, focus on improving your decision-making process. In addition to studying LearnWPT Strategy Episodes, taking notes, and discussing strategy with players you trust, bankroll management is one of the most effective ways to help gain consistency in your game. Let's see how.

If you are just starting out in poker, it's important that your bankroll is healthy and sufficient to allow for growth and learning of the game.

While you may see different guidelines for the appropriate amount of buy-ins to keep in your poker bankroll, in order to avoid risk of ruin in cash games you need to budget 50 buy-ins for the level you are playing. For proper tournament bankroll management as a professional you should never risk more than 1% of your bankroll in any given tournament, or in other words have at least 100 buy-ins for the tournament buy-in level you play.

Keep in mind the amounts noted above for the recommended number of buy-ins are for professional poker players who don’t have the ability to replenish their bankroll and need to stay in the game to make a living. As a recreational player you can be a little less strict with the number of buy-ins, however you should still have at least 25 buy-ins for the level of games you are playing.

So, let's look at an example of how bankroll management breaks down for the non-professional.

If you play $1-$2 no-limit cash games, and usually buy-in for $200, you want to make sure that you keep at least 25 buy-ins of $200 in your poker bankroll. So that would mean $5,000 set aside solely to play poker.

Maybe right now you cannot set that amount of money aside for playing poker, but you want to work towards the goal of having an appropriate bankroll. That is why having a bankroll is so important, as it can help your poker career or hobby to be self-sustaining. You won't have to take money out of your paycheck or take cash out from anywhere else to play poker.

The 25 buy-ins bankroll will minimize your risk of ruin, otherwise known as your chance of going broke. The lower number of buy-ins you have in your bankroll than 25, the higher your risk of ruin or the greater probability of you going broke. In the same way, if you go above 25 buy-ins for the given level you're reducing the risk of ruin further.

The best feature of bankroll management is that the number of buy-ins in your bankroll will dictate whether you're moving up or down, which takes the emotion out of that tough but important decision.

While it may seem discouraging to have to do so, it's very typical to have to regularly move up and down in stakes in order to sustain an appropriate bankroll.

This is why you shouldn't simply take money out of your poker bankroll whenever you feel like it. Ideally your poker bankroll should be in the range between 45-60 buy-ins before you even consider taking money out for everyday expenses or treating yourself. A conservative bankroll management strategy is the one that will help you achieve your goals and move up in levels. To adopt a more conservative bankroll strategy you should split your profits and take a percentage of the profit each month for life expenses while also leaving some of the profit to continue to grow your poker bankroll. The typical split would be 50-50, which means that if you have made $2,000 that month you're going to take $1,000 out for yourself and leave $1,000 profit for that to continue to grow your bankroll.

This is one of the key skills that separates amateurs from professionals. A lot of professional poker players who have had poor bankroll management skills are the players that are no longer able to make a living from playing poker. If you want to be successful in the long term, bankroll management is essential.

Another crucial skill that can help (or hurt) our ability to grow a poker bankroll and become a successful player is managing our emotions. When emotions guide us it’s often difficult to make decisions clearly. Tilt problems are a big part of playing poker. They happen when you are running bad, feel injustice, focus on bad luck, and many over-competitive people experience hate-losing tilt. Sometimes you will tilt because you think you made a mistake, are overconfident, feel like you deserve to win, or are motivated by revenge. Tilt occurs in everyone’s game sometimes however if you don’t face these issues they can have a dramatic effect on your ability to manage your bankroll properly.

To learn more check out LearnWPT Episode 146.

What is the connection between tilt and poker bankroll management?

We’ve all likely experienced winners tilt, otherwise known as overconfidence. When you start winning and it feels like it’s almost impossible to lose, you completely discount the possibility of making mistakes. Often this results in less studying and working as hard as before, instead hyper-focusing on winning every next game you play.

When you go through a prolonged period of winning it’s easy to make lousy bankroll management decisions and move up in limits too quickly. You might buy into a tournament above your limits or skill level, or spend a lot more money outside of the game than usual which can lead to future financial pressures. Instead, if you use bankroll management to limit yourself in periods when you could emotionally be at risk and don't let winner’s tilt guide you instead of your long-term goals in poker, your bankroll will grow. In tandem with proper bankroll management and consistent study, your profits will grow and allow you to consistently move up and play bigger buy-in cash games tournaments.

Bankroll management is a critical skill you can learn that will allow you to maintain ultimate focus on executing a game plan instead of worrying about the amount of money at stake in any one given tournament or cash game session.

Bankroll Management Tools

Bankroll tools can be handy in developing a routine and consistent process for poker bankroll management. Luckily, you don’t have to bring your pen and paper and you can manage everything using technology. There are many tools available today that can help with this task, including some mobile apps for Android or iOS devices and web browsers on your computer.

  • Bankroll management tools will help you visualize your progress. Many of the apps available on the market include multiple charts filtered by type of game, location, and blinds. These apps allow for efficient tracking of how much money you are making and investing, allowing you to build greater confidence and adjust quickly to the current status of your game.

  • Another technology that is widely available to track your bankroll is using Google sheets or Microsoft excel sheets. If you are creating your own method of bankroll management tracking spreadsheet, make sure you include the following details.

  1. Date of game or tournament
  2. Total Buy-ins (include any rebuys or add-ons)
  3. Total amount won/lost for the session
  4. Total dealer tips
  5. Any other expenses (meals/travel)

Poker can be one of the most lucrative hobbies you have, but many pitfalls can await your process if you don’t approach the game with a sound strategy for managing your money. Keeping a separate bankroll will allow better decision-making and perspective when playing poker. Proper poker bankroll management allows you to use chips as a utility to invest and make more money and frees you up to learn and grow by making objective decisions at the table.

What is the best growing bankroll plan?

So now that we’ve walked through the different bankroll management strategies for cash games and tournaments, let’s review these 3 tips for using your winnings to both grow your bankroll and reward yourself for disciplined efforts:

  1. Your goal should be to add 50% of all winnings to your bankroll. Whether you are playing poker professionally or as a recreational player, it is vital to invest a healthy percentage of winnings back into a bankroll to help secure your poker future.
  2. Spend 10-15% enjoying it. What else are you working for if you can take some time and celebrate? Use up to 15% of your winnings to have fun and treat yourself!
  3. Invest 15-20%. Take up to 20% of your profits each month and put them towards other hobbies, investments, or just put it in the bank. Investing your profits in projects that you like outside of the game might motivate you and inspire you to become an even better player.

Bankroll management strategies vary from player to player and depend on each person’s specific financial situation. These guidelines are provided to help you enjoy the game of No-Limit Texas Hold’em and hopefully make some money along the way!
